Bought a 1990 60 hp Evinrude a month ago. Was missing a few small parts. Got all the parts installed. Fired it up for the first time today. Sounded like it was only running on 2 cylinders. Pulled the plugs and #1 cylinder wasn't firing. Coil checked good. Plug wire was not conducting. Replaced plug wire. Fired it up, sounded good as long as I held the choke in. Then it sneezes out the #1 carb and looses rpm's. Checked the plugs again and #3 looks like it isn't firing all the time (wet). Took the plug wire apart and cleaned it. Still won't idle (cough and dies). I've got the OMC manuall for this motor. Says a lean condition will make it sneeze through the carb. Any suggestions as to what I should try next? This motor has very low hours on it. I'm going to check the compression next. I'll post what I get.

I just checked the compression 135, 135, 137.
And # 3 plug is not firing. Forgot to mention that I replaced the coil and wire on #3 also. Gonna take the coil back of and clean the mounting surface and try again. I can see the tops of the pistons and they are very clean. Motor was run just a few times and stored since '94.
I'll be back.

Checked all the wiring connections, everything looked good, no corrosion. Put an automotive timing light on each plug wire. getting spark to all 3. #3 is still wet and clean, going to get a new plug. I'll be back

Build you a spark check tool like this. web page
I made it out of a piece of ply wood, some old plugs and a lacing wire. Your spark should jump at least 7/16 inch with a good blue spark and a real snap.

Low hours or not, clogged carbs create all sorts of idle, starting, and high speed operation problems. The engine needs air, fuel, spark, and everything must happen at the right time. Missing any one of these and the engine will not perform. Just use logic when isolating the problem to fuel, spark, air, timing.

It wasn't the plugs. It's probably the carbs. Got good spark on all 3 cyls. If I hold my hand over the bottom carb inlet it runs pretty smooth. So gotta get the rebuild kits to go any farther.

Got the carbs off and rebuilt. 1 and 2 looked alright, little bit of crud in the bowls. # 3 was filthy. Main jet totally clogged.
