This weekend I noticed a vibration on my '96 Larson 174SEI/3.0/Volvo/Penta. I Know my front port side motor mount is loose. Can anyone tell me can this be the source of a vibration or should I look else where. I had the outdrive serviced in May- no parts were required and the dealer indicated greased gimbal and ujoints and changed outdrive oil. My first thought was "u-joints going". Is their a way to isolate/identify the source, short of pulling the outdrive?

Thanks,
Mark

You can check the ujoints and gimbal bearing while you have the outdrive off doing an alignment. You will need an alignment bar just like OMC, and Mercruiser uses to align the engine to the gimbal bearing. If you don't you will destroy the coupler and it will be necessary to pull the engine to replace it.

Thanks Don.

Should I feel pretty confident the dealer checked the alignment as they reinstalled the outdrive in May? Could a loose motor mount cause a vibration?

Thanks for your Help!
Mark

If I were you, I would be trying to find an alignment tool and check the alignment. and the loose motor mount will ahve to be tightened and or replaced. Any time the motor mount is changed or comes loose or the outdrive is removed, the alignment should be checked. I have a local place that rents the tool. Maybe you could find the same.

I'm just a Merc. guy looking at a volvo post...but... it would seam that alignment cannot be steady from idle to full torque with a loose motor mount ??? Possibly the dealer "missed" the loose mount and it is causing problems now that the boat is in the water and flexing ?

Thanks for the help. I better move to "restoration" to solve the motormount issue before I go any further.
Mark

Re: motor mount /alignment/vibration?

After reading another thread about vibration, I decided to grab the prop blades and see if there was any side to side play. There was none.
At that point I looked at the prop real closely and I have two bent blades.

Ordered new prop today. I looked at that prop before I posted guys...I swear.. Oh well.

Note to self.. Always look for the obvious.

Mark
