I have a 3.0 liter mercruiser in a 96 bayliner. i took the boat out for the first time last weekend and occasionally the motor would continue to run for 3-4 seconds after being shut off. I've come up with two possible causes in my mind...overheating which i think isn't the problem since it runs 140-160 per the factory gauges. Or the timing being off. I read that there is something special about timing the motor. If so how do you do it? any other possible causes???

Their was a service bullitin on this several years ago. Run the blower more, let it idle for two to three min. before shutdown. Check the timing and go to a higher grade of fuel.

High idle and not allowing the engine to cool down for a couple of minutes are the 2 biggest reasons. Timing and lean fuel mixture is another couple of problems.<br />What distributor do you have? If it's the EST, then you have to put it in base timing mode in order to set the timing.
