I have a 1980 chrysler charger 85hp outboard motor. Turned over and ran good today. This afternoon I went to take it out fishing and the motor wouldnt turn over. Batt is fully charged and pretty new so not the batt. When I tap on the starter with a hammer, It starts to turn over then stops right away. But thats the only time it will turn over. the sound it makes when im trying to start it is just a hum or something/ But when Im turning the key and tapping lightly around the starter, the motor turns over good and pushes the into the fly wheel but then instantly stops. It takes a little time for this to happen but if I do sit there and keep Turning the key and tapping all around the starter eventually the motor turns over and the starter pushes the thing up into the flywheel, then as soon as it does that, it stops again. Just turn the key and no turning over. Anybody know what Im talking about. Wish I knew how to better describe whats wrong. Sorry and THANKS for any help! (i checked ALL connections, theres no corrosion or loose wires and theyre real clean)thx

1. Check starter mounting bolts are they tight. This is connection to the ground. IF GOOD
2. Connect any 12 volts light tester to the wire from starter relay to the starter motor. Turn the key in start position, if tester lights is on - starter relay is good. If not replace relay.
3. If starter relay is good problem is in starter motor. Disconnect battery, take out starter for repair or simply replace with new starter.
Good luck.

Rebuild or clean the starter.
Make sure all connections are tight.Grounds too.
Check the cable for weak spots. The cable ends for corrosion and bad spots.
Then remove the plugs and check the compression.
It sounds like the starter but low compression can cause that too.

Ok, starter is bad. Thanks for help, you all are wonderful. Now, I took the starter off of the motor. Its on my work table ready to be rebuilt, cleaned or whatever anybody suggests. I cant find a starter in town anywhere this old. (1980) But I can rebuild or clean brushes or anything else you all think. Is there somewhere to order a rebuild kit or is there rebuild parts at local store like autozone, lowes or somewhere? I know, Im not the brightest bulb in the house but just checking. (Not rich) Thanks too for all help so far! A lot.

Try Franz marine.
Or Valley Sales in Prudenville,Mi.
Both on the net.
Valley doesn't answer his e-mails.
So call.
You have the old style starter and parts will be a bit harder to find.
