Hi experts,

I have a 2000 Merc OB 90HP ELPT Serial on the sticker says 0T067768. Recently purchased the boat (pontoon) and motor from a marine shop (consignment) and have taken it out a few times. This last two times I trimmed down in the parking lot, I noticed motor oil drip from the prop collar (see pic...the dark streak on the skeg is the oil). It wasnt a lot...maybe 1oz. I cant find a whole lot of good info on this issue except for two-strokes...and when I asked a marine mechanic he couldnt think of how motor oil would drain down there from a 4-stroke. The inside cowl bowl and outside of the motor looks perfectly clean. No oil or residue, no leak from the fill cap or dipstick.

Oh and the motor runs great. There is no milky oil, in either the motor or the lower unit. And I get almost all 6000 RPM at WOT. Compression check looks good, too.

So, I'm kinda baffled at how I would get oil down there, too. Is there an oil cooler on these motors that may be leaking? I am trying to look at microfiche on my motor but several of the sites dont recognize the serial #. I included a pic of that, too, if anyone knows which motor it is.

Any guidance or suggestion are appreciated.

Remove the prop and have a look to see if seals, items 19 and 20 under Gear Hsg(Prop-2.33:1)(S/N-0T599000 & Up)
are leaking at the bottom of the prop shaft.

Thanks, Carholme, I will check that out. But do those (parts 19/20) seal the motor oil, or the lower unit oil from leaking? Just asking because several people keep asking if I know it is for sure motor oil. The L/U oil is blue, and the leaking oil is definitely the 90w motor oil. Thanks for the help!

They seal the LU oil from leaking out. You say the leaking oil is definitely 90w. You are not using 90w in the engine, are you?

Apologies...I confused myself which is easy to do. The L/U or gearcase lube is SAE 90 from Merc. I just changed that last week and it is blueish green. The motor oil is 25W-40 and is standard engine oil color. That 25w-40 is what appears to be leaking. When I swipe it off of the skeg with my finger or a towel it is the color of motor oil, and not blue/green in any way.

You could drop the LU and see what your exhaust tube looks like. If it is motor oil, that is probably where you will find it. Give it a good clean out and see how long it takes it to re-appear.

Ok, I dug into this a little more and it appears that one of my 2 fuel pumps has an issue. When I pump the primer bulb, I see fuel leak out of the back of the top fuel pump. It also appears that the motor is "making oil". I pulled the dipstick after a day out, and it was at least a quart overfull, and it smells of gas...so I am fairly sure I have a bad diaphram in one of them.

I am going to rebuild one or both fuel pumps, but I guess my follow up question at this point would be...would this cause a blow-forward, or blow-back, or ring seepage that could be the culprit for oil collecting in the exhaust?

It never seems to be that much, maybe a couple of ounces (1/4 cup) when sitting after a trip to the lake.

Thanks.
