Miba,

Sounds very much like a fuse issue from helm controls backwards.

The solenoid getting voltage is a good thing as that indicates you have overall good connections at the engine.

What's the status of the other accessories... Lights, Guages, Horn, stereo (if equipped)?

well checked all connections everything ok. Took shift control apart checked neutral safety switch. ohmed out when depressed and open when released checked all connections and don't really know what I did but all of a sudden the trim worked and engine started.tried it quite a few times before I reassembled and it worked until I mounted it back on boat now nothing again .Any thoughts

Let me see if I follow you.. you took the outboard off the boat while you worked on it?

During this process, the trim began to work although nothing strikes you as to what you might have corrected to get that functioning.

Re-assembled, popped it back on the transom, re-established connectivity to the helm controls.. nothing. no ignition and trim is gone again?

Sorry pantaloons I guess I didn't explain myself .After checking all connections I took the control box off the boat not motor.I checked switches and connections there and that's when the trim and ignition worked Reassembled box ,kept checking to see it was still functioning. So box was back together and still worked, minute I attached box to boat and nothing .And the weird thing if trim works ignition works if not neither works .Baffled in Michigan

I have a 1989 Wellcraft coastal 26' and my dash lights did not work because of a bad dash switch, I replaced the switch with a new one I got from West Marine and hooked it up the same way I took the old one out. As soon as I turned the switch on there is a small black box behind the dash with a 6 prong harness running to it and it started smoking???? Can anybody tell me what the box is or doses?? and where I can get another one Please. Also I have a starboard trim switch that went out on the out drive, can I replace the switch with out taking the out drive off???
Thank you,

Gld, you might want to start a new thread.

Miba,

That is very odd; but it sounds to me when you attach the control box to the boat you are not properly grounded anymore...or causing a short. Is it repeatable? Dismount the box and stuff works again?
