Motor Overheated and died

Here's The Full Story. I Have A 1999 Sportcraft 231 With A Volvo Penta 5.0 Gi. The Power Steering V-Belt Snapped In Half. I Bought A New Belt, And Began Replacing it. I Removed The Bracket That Goes Between The Impeller Intake And Outlet Hose. I Removed The Intake And Outlet Hoses, And All Of The Water Drained Out Of The Hoses. I Then Loosened The Power Steering Pump Bolts, And Slipped The New Belt On. I Then Pulled The Power Steering Pump Back, And Tightened The Bolts Back. I Then Reconnected The Hoses And The Bracket.

The Next Time I Took The Boat Out (With The Potential New Owner Of The Boat), The Motor Shut Off, After Moving At About 6Mph For 2 Minutes. The Temp Gauge Was At 200?F And There Was An Electrical Sound Coming From The Motor (Sounded Like The Outboard Trim Was Going Up Or Down). The Motor Took A Long Time To restar, And When It Did, It Ran At A Very Low Idle, Barely turning The Motor. The Motor Would OccasionalLy Jump To About 1800 Rpm, Then Sputter. It Would Only Stay Running For About 30 Seconds. Luckily The Tides Were In Our Favor, And They Carried Us Back To The Slip. The Motor Would Not Start When We Got Back.

Was I Supposed To Refill The Hoses With Water After They Drained? All Help Is Appreciated, I Would Like To Sell Asap!

No, it should have primed itself assuming you didn't reverse the hoses which I doubt. I think the sound you heard was your fuel pump running and apparently you're out of fuel to the engine. It's classic symptoms. 200 degrees isn't bad, and the gauge may not be all that accurate. I suspect the low idle and sputtering just didn't circulate water all that well. Free and easy.. Jiggle the deadman switch, make sure it's fully on and not cutting in and out. Check for fuel pressure, check fuel level, unscrew fuel water separator see if it has gas and/or water in it. I remember there being a paint issue with the fuel pump, but lets do the basic stuff first.

I'm Assuming The Deadman Switch Is The Engine Kill Switch Located By The Throttle? Thanks So Much For Your Help, I'm Headed To The Boat now.

For Anyone Who Has The Same Problems...
I Installed A New Fuel Filter And The Boat Fired Right Up, But Still Got Hot. I Switched The Raw Water Intake And Outlet Hoses (FYI, The Bottom Hose Goes To The Thermostat!!!) And It stays under 180?F. I'm Gonna Take The Boat For A Spin Tomorrow And Do A Full Test Ride, I'll Let You Know If I Encounter Any More Problems. Thanks For The Help Walt!
