I have an old 2hp evinrude, 1974.motor will tun, there is a spark, but it won't come to life. Is this type of motor supposed to have a clutch. I can't see one and have to attempt to start it with the prop rotating. is this right? Fuel is getting to the engine and the cylinder I pull start it on turns well enough and seems to have compression? What next?

Re: motor problem

Hi Ark<br />If you have good spark and compression. Then you may need to adjust the carb. You may be getting too much fuel. You may need to clean the carb. The carb may have a stuck float or the float may be out of adjustment. Make sure the choke or primimg system is working properly. Make sure that the fuel is mixed at 50:1. You really should have a gauge to check compression. But so long as you have a good bounce off the compression stroke that should be ok. Another thing that is common here are leaking crankcases. You may have leaking crank shaft seals. For a 2-stroke motor to run the crankcase has to be under compression as well.
