Good day all.
I have a 1973 Mercruiser 165HP straight 6 I/O sterndrive. While trolling on the lake the motor shut down and would not start back up. The motor will turn over but just wont start. Does anyone have any insite in what could be wrong and what to try.

Re: Motor Problems

Hi Jerzyfine,

I would start with the basic troubleshooting steps. Fuel, spark, and air

Make sure you have fuel, does it have fuel all the way to the carb?

Then I would check to make sure you are getting spark. Pull a sparkplug and make sure its sparking.

Air is good if you can breath next to the motor. :joyous:

Depending on what you find we can help further.

Is choke working? Have someone hold there hand over carb see if its getting gas.sometimes you can choke it and suck the dirt out.you could always pour little gas in carb too see if it starts.if so probly fuel filter,in fuel system.

When was the last time the engine was serviced and tuned up? What was done?

Curious if the OP has checked spark yet. Suspect dirty/worn points.

Took it to 2 boat mechanics and they both said the same thing. The coil is actually what went and the previous owner had a auto distributor in it lol (not actually funny) so I've been running a potential bomb for the summer apparently.
