Motor ran fine, muff slipped into prop...

Hi all, I bought this boat with a 45 hp chrysler, I believe it was made in the early eighties. Anyhow I got it a new battery and it started right up. (boat hasn't been run in two years). Well after running it a couple minutes I gave it some throttle and the #@$@muffs slipped off and hit the prop and it conked out. Now it won't start. Is there a kill switch on this motor somewhere that I don't know about? Just for the record I also was using the same gas that came with the boat, which after reading a couple of posts in this forum I realize I shouldn't have but that is water under the bridge now. I took the plugs out and they were wet with gas so I dried them and cranked it a few times to blow any excess gas out but it didn't help. I tried starting fluid to see if it would at least fire but nothing which leads me to believe that there may be a kill switch and i don't know where to look. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Rich M.

First you need a manual before starting any repairs. It sure seems you have no spark.
Check for spark. There is a slim chance when the motor stopped you it bent the flywheel key.
This could throw off the timing for proper spark
Check the kill circuit.Dont forget the kill
circuit shorts the mag to ground. You could try
unhooking the kill circuit, see if it will run.

Hey iRich,
There's gotta be a kill switch on that motor. Have you checked your spark?
Backlash

thanks for the replies guys. I do not see any kind of switch on the motor or under the dash. How would I disable the kill circuit? btw, I am sure it didn't bend the flywheel key as it did no damage to the muffs at all, although I bought a new pair as the old ones were wore out and loose which is why I'm in the boat I'm in now. It doesn't have any spark either so I guess we are on the right track. Thanks again

Rich

I was wrong...it does have spark at one cylinder but not the other..switched wire around and it wasn't the wire or plug, both work fine on the other coil. does this mean the coil is bad or could there be another reason?thanks,

Rich

Hey iRich,
I'm not that familiar with your Chrysler but I'd look around the control box (forward/reverse/throttle) to see if there's a remote kill switch on the box anywhere. There's usually one there (often with a lanyard attached).
This type requires that you physically reattach the clip to the control box before you can get any spark. By the way, were you in the boat (or hands on the control box) when the motor quit?
Backlash

Switch the coils & see if the spark moves with the coil. If it does, you'll need a new coil.
Backlash

Check the nuteral safty switch on the side of the motor. You should see a button that gets pushed
in by a small arm when you put the motor in nuteral. Try pushing
it in all the way with your finger, and turning
it over.
