This motor a late 60’s 40 HP Evinrude has been sitting for 3 years! I placed in a barrel of water and it started right up but I notice that the head was getting hot and upon closer inspection there was no water coming out the exhaust but the water in the barrel was churning( it was in neutral). I pulled the thermostat and restarted the engine but no water coming out there either. I have work on cars for a long time but not really at all on boat motors. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I want to lean.

Re: Motor running hot

You need to buy a complete water pump kit and replace yours. The agitation you see is probably just exhaust.

You should consider buying a model specific service manual before you run the motor any more.

There are Big Twin 40HP and Lark 40HP in the 1960's. The model number will help this discussion along.
