motor runs but wont idle

1989 johnson outboard 120 hp just replaced rectifier, prior to replacing it motor ran great just wasnt charging battery,,,now motor will start and run at a high idle but as soon as i throttle down motor shuts off, try and restart with idle set down motor will start and run for about 3 seconds and shuts off, set idle up high motor starts and runs fine back it down and shuts off, any ideas ???????

will the motor run wot? check the basic plugs, fuel for leaks, compression(low comp. wont idle), idle set right.

motor runs great at high idle, when i back it down to low idle it shuts off,plugs are clean and only a year old, no fuel leaks,,,,not sure how to adjust the idle, was wondering if it might be a timming issue ?
