motor runs good without top

i have a 1978 70 hp evinrude prof. rebuilt carbs new coils runs good but when i put the cover on it sounds like it chokes out and dies why would this be please help me

sounds like you have exhaust leak base gasket?

ok you were rite so how much do u think it should be to have it replaced and would it even be worth it on a 1978 motor, some of the bolts are broke and need to be drilled and taped also so i just dont know if it would be worth fixin???????

If you want a cheapo fix, run a fresh air tube from the outside to the carb inlet.

yes could run the fresh air line but it is not only leaking fumes it is spitting out water as well so i dont want it to over heat

Just replace the gasket, if that's all that's wrong.

I would go with the gasket replacement if that is what the problem is. If there is nothing else wrong with the motor it is a good investment.
