Motor runs then dies, looses spark. Mercruiser 3.0

The boat fires up, and it will idle just fine for anywhere from a few seconds to a minute, then it just dies.

I hauled out my trusty timing gun, and clamped it on the wire from the coil to the distributor cap. After a few tries, it started again and I could see the spark with my timing gun. Then it died again, and I could see that the spark went away.

I'm running with the cable (-) from the interrupt switch and tach disconnected, so the only thing supplying (-) to the coil is the distributor. I've got voltage on the (+) side of the coil at all times.

The rotor is turning. I've checked and cleaned all connections. I've got new spark plug wires. I've also got a new rotor, but I've eliminated the rotor and distributor cap since I don't get a spark coming in to the cap. I had a new condenser, so I put that in after the problem occurred, but it didn't help.

All I can think of are two things - the coil, or the contacts.

The contacts look good, and they certainly close and open fine and seat properly. I've got a new set that I can put in once I find my gapping tools.

The ohm readings on the coil are with in spec, but could they be good for a while and go bad, or short or something, after it is run for a minute?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Of course, we're headed out after work and my wife is NOT going to be happy with me if I "fuss and fiddle and fart around" with the boat all night :).

Put in new coil and points, seems to be good. Fingers crossed.

Total time to replace coil and points - 20 minutes.
Total time to get registration at sec. of state - 3 hours.
