Motor shakes at idle, motor mount?

Hi everyone, I have a 74 40 hp Evinrude. The motor shakes at idle I am thinking it is the front top motor mount. I replaced the top sides it didn't seem to help much. The lower one seem in good shape. The front looks to be a little harder to get to. So I thought I would get some advice before I spend the money on the part and the time to change it out. I can feel the shaking in the steering wheel at idle as well. Motor mount?

Thanks

More likely, you have a two stroke...no cure!

Grab hold of the powerhead and see if you can move it fore and aft. A slight movement in the rubber is normal. If it flops around loose, the front mount is broken.

A slight side to side shake at idle is normal. That's just the way they are.

Is the hood loose and flopping around? There are four small rubber mounts supporting the lower cover.

I agree, it is a 35 year old 2 stroke and they shake, it is the nature of the beast.

The only thing I could think was if it is a 2 cylinder maybe you dropped a cylinder and it is idling rough.

Is it shaking more than normal or it has always done this?

Maybe it needs a tuneup? Mine shook quite a bit,but new spark plugs and a good carb cleaning calmed it down quite a bit.

Looking at it I can move the motor or twist it about 3/4 of an inch either way. It does not want to move much pulling it from front to back. I might have to live with it seeing the price of new mounts. Thanks guys.

I would really look into cleaning your carbs, if one cylinder isn't getting gas it isn't getting oil either and could cause serious problems very shortly.

I don't think the motor mount are bad, they made them to move quite alot.

I got a dental syringe from CVS that has a plastic tip and you can squirt a little gas into each cylinder to see if it makes it run better, if so you have a dirty carb

Cleaning carbs isn't hard and probably needs done anyways and it certainly can't hurt anything.

Your mounts are not bad. If it runs good, leave it alone, it isn't broke. That is not a Rolls Royce.
