Motor stalling out

Hey guys,

new boater here very green and need a little help.

have a 99 bayliner ciera 2655 with a 2004 Merc 5.7 TKS

I start it up and idles fine at about 650-700 RPM’s

Runs at about 160 degrees

Take the boat out and it seems to be running very well for a while but after a bit the RPMs just go down and it stalls out.

Try to restart normally but when I upshift to drive it will die out again.

On the fly I remove the throttle cable and give it a few good revs after my buddy starts it and this seems to be enough to get me back to the slip.

Recently rebuild the carb and adjusted the float to SELOC specs as this was happening before I rebuilt the carb. Trust me it needed a good cleaning and rebuild.

Anyone have any ideas on what I am experiencing and a resolve?

Dump the Seloc manual. Good for bird cages and outhouses only. You can access the Merc Service manual at www.boatinfo.no

If the issue is that when you try and shift, whether into or out of gear, and the motor dies, then your lower shift cable is hanging up and needs replacing.

Otherwise, recheck carburetor, especially float height with the Merc manual. Dump the contents of your fuel filter in a clear glass container and see if there is anything but pure gas in there. Also keep in mind a plugged up fuel tank vent can leave the engine starving for gas when the tank builds up a vacuum after running for a while. Happens again, open the filler cap and see if it sucks in air.

As you can tell, I think it sounds fuel related, or maybe lower shift cable.

Thanks Rick,

I’ll try as you suggested. What wierd is that it runs fine for a while but I notice it’s happen as I’m trying to lower my rpms (ie. make a turn or turn around). It also happened today when I shifted into neutral to back into the slip.
