motor stalls under load / battery drains fast

1984 75 HP Evinrude, just restored as a service boat for a 28 foot 1917 Herreshoff S boat, When I went to tow the sail boat to a race as soon as the BW Nauset took a load the motor died, started again and as it took the load it died , would not start again and the new battery with a full charge died after 4 or 5 tries, motor was serviced over the winter the , the boat is new too Me ,and I have no experience with OB's. Had a idle/shifting problem 1st and was able to get by that with the forums help

could be a lot of things. could be starving for fuel when put under a load. could be timing. carb synch ect

i'd check compression, spark on all cylinder, when you had idle problem did you rebuild carbs with a rebuild kit. did you do the link and sink procedure after reinstalling the carbs. this put the carbs in sinc with the engine timing, so they advance together. i would have the battery load tested (free)at the auto parts store, unless you just sat there an ground and ground the starter. what have you done to the motor what is the history.

When bought the boat I had the engin removed at an Evinrude dealer an ask to evaluate it to see if it a decent motor , came back with a good report, they did a winter service ,replaced air box gasket,impellor,plugs,thermostate. they said the motor had good compression, spark ,etc so I suspect might be one or all of the things You mentioned
