motor stalls

I have a 1983 mercury 90 hp two stroke. on a 17' 8" fiberglass bow rider. (SeaSprite) I bought this boat and motor new. All most from day one it would stall if I "Hit It" while trying to get a skier up out of the water. But if I would advance the throttle slowly to full throttle the motor would accelerate fine. The motor works perfectly except for this problem when water skiing. I spent a fair amount of money the first few years I had the boat trying to solve this problem with my dealer. I even wrote a letter to mercury explaining my problem. To there credit they sent a factory tec. to my dealer and together they tried to solve the problem. The fuel pump was serviced and modules replaced at no coast to me. Over the years I have had another module and the magneto replaced because of different problems always by a dealer. I have tried using a portable gas tank and I even tried a smaller pitch prop. But the problem has never gone away. What do you think?

Re: motor stalls

Wow you had this thing since new. I would have had mercury replace it when you were fist having issues. But since you are still having issues sounds like a carb tune issue. When you "Hit it" does it seem to choke on fuel? I would try to lean it out and see were that gets you. However if you have a good shop around you i would also see if they could rebuild or tune them for you. When was the last time the carbs were rebuilt? Also does it seem to do it only when there is a load on the motor?

Re: motor stalls

A 2 stroke that bog on acceleration under heavier loads, yet otherwise seems fine with normal, or lighter loads, is still slightly lean in the idle mixture.

Open the idle mixture screws (CCW) just the bladewidth of the screwdriver slot and retest. May need to repeat once or twice til perfected.

Re: motor stalls

The motor only stalls when I hit it with a heavy load like pulling up a skier. It will start to accelerate and then bog down. If I bring the throttle back to idle and advance it slowly it will accelerate just fine. I have had this boat a long time. Except for this problem it has been a great source of fun and pleasure for me and my family. I love working on it and keeping it looking all most like new. This summer my two sons and I are taking it to Ontario for a week of fishing. My sons and grandchildren have learned to water ski and fish with me and this boat. I love it and some day I will give it to one of my sons.

Thanks for the advice. I will try adjusting the idle as you suggest. I am pretty good at working on lawn mower engines, but when I look at those three carbs in a row I get scared. It would be something if its that simple. I have tried using a potable gas tank and fuel line.

Re: motor stalls

Charlie is probably spot on with his diagnosis. All the inline Mercs have that behavior, and to think the factory and the dealer couldn't help you (in 1984) is almost unimagineable.

Re: motor stalls

A 2 stroke O/B and a 2 stroke weed-wacker act the same when it comes to adjusting the idle mixture, ANY leanness in the idle and they won't take throttle very well, and the larger the load the MORE the idle mixture needs to be just a skoosh FATTER.
