motor stand made from pressure treated

I was looking for ideas for a motor stand and noticed none that I saw are made of pressure treated wood. Mine will be left outside due to lack of indoor space. I'm in Florida and worry about untreated wood deteriorating.

The reason I ask about pressure treated is I have heard the new stuff causes problems with certain metals and wondered if anyone knows of problems I may encounter with either fasteners or my outboard itself.

Here is a beefy stand that looks great incase it may help someone else (scroll down and look for bold date of February 2005).

http://www.brit.ca/~tboicey/boats/

Thanks,

Jeff

Thanks Rick that was fast! So fast in fact that I accidentally posted only part of my question and you answered faster than I could edit my post.
I like this stand however where I live there are lots of kids including my own so I was looking for the beefiest stand I could find since I would not be surprised to find one of them on the motor rodeo style sometime and I don't want anyone getting hurt. My original post now has a link to The stand I will copy only in a smaller version. I appreciate your time and if you have a comment on the pressure treated issue I would appreciate your opinion.

Thanks,

Jeff

Yeah, that one in the pic. looks plenty beefy for safety. In Florida, I would use pressure treated lumber, although it will make the stand itself pretty heavy. But that may be just what you're after. Good luck with it and post a pic. when it's finished...

Re: motor stand made from pressure treated

Yea, I liked that one too... I like the simpleness of the 2x12 one and it leaves no doubt about safety.

The reason I was concerned about the corrosion issue with the pressure treated was that a guy I know from my sons Boy Scout patrol built a 40k surround deck on a really nice house and used galvanized nails in assembly. A week later he attended some sort of training that is required of contractors and the subject was the new pressure treated wood corroding galvanized. from what they told him in 4-5 years the galvanized would be shot. He was not too happy to have to go back to the owner and explain the problem. It was a pretty sore spot for him so I sort of hate to ask him for more info.

One other instance I am aware of is that my father bought a new pontoon trailer and it had plastic caps on the skids rather than carpet. The boat yard told him the pressure treated caused the carpet to have a reaction that was causing problems that I do not recall what they are. I figured that sounds like my kind of luck so I thought I would ask before I jumped into it.

Thanks again,

Jeff

By the way my motor is an '88 90HP Johnson Seahorse. It's pretty heavy and bulky so I don't want any doubt!

Jeff

Re: motor stand made from pressure treated

Commercial grade PT is still CCA and legal. But an easy remedy to keep motor from touching is a cheap rubber floor mat for cars. $3 at Wallyworld. Drape it over the stand before setting the motor down. If you're really anal put nylon sleeves where the motor bolts go through the wood...50 cents each at Lowes. It will be totally isolated.

I made a simple A frame stand built of 2x6 pt with a 2x8 bolted to the A as the motor mount. I used 2x4s all around the base to keep it from spreading. All was through bolted. It held motors up to 140omc with no problems.

Good idea Bill. Simple enough and that is why I posted here. I figured somebody has "been there done that." I don't know why I didn't remember my brothers aluminum boat. We had to isolate the motor and the throttle assembly by means of a rubber mat to fight corrosion caused by the salt water and contact of unlike metals.

Thanks for the help,

Jeff

the new pressure treated wood, does not stop water intrusion, which causes the rot problem. go ahead and use southern yellow pine, lag bolt it together. and put a good coat of paint on it. you don't want the dog or the baby chewing on the pressure treated. you dom't want to be contuniually touching the pressure treated while work on the motor. retired general contractor.

Re: motor stand made from pressure treated

Creosote is really the only pt process that waterproofs and it isn't used much except on railroad ties, etc.. PT isn't about water proofing anymore. Chemicals injected into the wood take the food sources away for rot fungi and bugs. I use 3/4 pt ply under the wheels of my boat trailer and it's still ok after 10yrs sitting on soil in the woods. Use stainless or galvanized fasteners. There won't be any problems.

There a thumnail I have (click to enlarge) that shows the stand back behind the boat. The garage pic is a little dark.

Not that it matters much now, but for design sake here is the stand that I made. The only pressure treated part is where the motor mounts to. It was a part of a board from a picnic table. I painted that part and some of the rest until I ran out of paint.
