Motor Starting w/o Outdrive

Hello All,

I'm selling my boat over the weekend and the last step is to show the potential buyer that the engine runs. The outdrive is pulled from the boat due to damage and I'm a little nervous starting up the motor without causing damage. If I hook a hose up to the water intake hose at the transom should I be good? Is there anything else? I don't want the sale to go south because I'm starting the boat on land w/o the outdrive on. Putting the throttle in nuetral shouldn't be an issue, correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Yep you will be OK with a garden hose rigged up to the water intake. You just have the upper and lower off correct ? The bell housing and gimble assembly is still in place ? You can also shift it wherever ya want. Your little shift fork will just move back and forth in the air. Sorry to hear ya sell off. Buying a bigger one ??? BTW its always good practice to give more info on your rig when posting a question. Like year, engine, which drive...etc...

you can run it on land for a bit w/ no water... a min, just keep an eye on the manifolds, when they start to get warm shut her down.

Someone is going to buy the boat without the outdrive installed?

You have no worries.

Wait. You CAN run a Bravo-equipped engine without the drive mounted if you have a hose connected with water flowing. You can't run a Bravo for even a few seconds without water; you'll burn up the impellor in the water pump. You can run an Alpha-equipped for a few minutes without water flow. If the manifolds get hot enough that you can't touch them, you'll burn up the flappers in the Y-pipe. I sold my previous boat (Alpha-equipped) with the outdrive sitting in my garage and the boat in the marina. We started it and ran it for about two minutes. The buyer wanted to check how it started and idled. No problem. Hy

Yes, she is a Bravo 2 / 454 7.4L... How will I know that the garden hose is working properly? I don't want to hook it up and start the engine not realizing that the hose isn't performing like it should. Any indicators that the impeller is drawing the water properly before / after its started?

With the Bravo drives, hook your water hose to the intake side of the raw water pump.

Water will come out of the exhaust bellows and idle relief ports on gimbal housing.

Can I feed the hose thru the transom where the water intake tube is or is it wiser to disconnect the piping and install the hose at the water impeller?

With the drive off I just jam the hose into the water tube at the bellhousing and tie it off so it can't fall out. Open the tap FULLY[/] and you're good to go...
