Ok, I have a 1965 Evinrude 60 h.p. I want to take it to a shop, b/c after rebuilding the foot, the boat still won't go into gear, and the shift linkage keeps coming undone and i'm starting to lose patience. How can I avoid the high price of shop bills? I know i can fix it, i just need some insight from you pros out there. Everything in the foot looks good, clutch dog, and forward gear, but i dont think the clip on the bottom of the shift rod is right. I have it put around the forward gear, however the boats not moving. Any help towards this would be gretly appreciated.

My bad, it is a manual shift i was thinking about something else. The linkage i'm dealing with is through the view hole, on the left side of the engine. I do not believe that i have the linkage piece connected to the shift rod right in the foot.

The shift rod is held in place by a screw on the lower unit. It must be started thru the shift rod. Are you sure the screw holding the shift rod is in place.
