motor swap on my boat, question(s)

I currently have a 1989 Evinrude 70hp on my boat...Its underpowered. My boat is rated for a 130, and I know a guy here that wants to downsize his motor on his boat because its too much for what he has.

Its a 1995 Johnson 130hp, with a stainless prop, in great condition. Obviously, I cant turn that down.

My question is that if my cables reach this motor, then my controls should work for this motor right?

How does the tilt and trim usually hook up to an outboard, because there are like 4 spots on my boat where the tilt and trim can be controlled, do they all come to a central location where I can just unhook and rehook to another motor with tilt and trim?

what are some other things I need to check compatibility with. I know this motor is worth a bit more than mine, but I dont want to have to spend a whole lot of money at the same time getting it to work with my boat.

thanks

when you buy an outboard it should come with controls and tach.
cables need to fit the hull length , they are cheap.

right, but we are keeping our controls...its the only way the guy will do it. His steering, throttle, and shift cables are the same since its a Johnson and mine is an Evinrude.

Ideally we would just switch controls, but we arent. With that said, I was just asking to see what compatibility issues we might run into.

On my control box, there is a small 2 hole plug, it might be 3 holes...what is that for.

Its right under where the key is...

also, I have 4 spots on my boat that activate the tilt and trim, if I get this new motor and it has tilt and trim, will it be easy to just reconnect and they all work?

thanks

You should both have red plug harnesses so those should just plug in and all the motor parts should work. The cables should be compatible, but you will need to adjust them to work on each motor. The adjustment is problbly close now, but you will need to verify proper shifting and that the carb plates will open fully. Just do a full link and sink and you will be fine. As for the tilt and trim, in all likely hood there will only be two wires going to it and your set up will work fine. If you have a factory type harness I wouldn't worry about it. If something was added then you would have to address it when you see how it operates.
