i have a 1996 johnson 60hp on a crestliner 1750 sportfish and looking to up the motor hp. i found a 1996 evinrude 88hp spl and the guy says that the evinrude has the power trim and tilt but no controls. he also says that in 1996 evinrude changed the wiring on the motor? he says the motor that he has was built early in the year and the it still has the old style " big red plug".
now my question is, is this true what he's saying or hogwash? will the controls off of the johnson fit the evinrude? how much would it take to swap out these two motors? is it as easy as swapping motors and connecting the wiring and controls or is there more to it? for the price he's asking it would almost cost me money not to buy it!!! i called over twelve marinas and nobody has used outboards over 60hp!!!

EDIT 1.- MY MOTOR IS A 1996 JOHNSON 60HP MODEL # J60TLEDR

Re: motor swap q's

I just swapped from a 1973 50HP Johnson to a 1985 Evinrude 40 (got a great deal with no controls). Guess what? Same controls and same red plug ment that it was easy once I drilled new holes in the transom for the new plate as it didn't match my own. If your old motor has a red plug and the one you want to get does then I day your looking at an easy swap. I had mine done in a day.

The throttle controls will work as is, but you will need to buy an adapter to go from the black plug wiring harness to the red plug motor. Then it will be a plug and play proposition. A boat dealer should be able to get you one or you can sometimes find them on line.
