motor swap question

Be kind gentlemen, I am a newbie to inboards and trying to learn.

I have a Bayliner with a Volvo Penta AQ125/270 set up. The AQ125 is shot, frozen solid from sitting. I have an AQ131 from another boat and was wondering if I can swap out the motors or will I have problems and if so, what would I need to do to make this swap?

Thanks for any and all help in adavance.

Re: motor swap question

I haven't done this swap personally, but it seems like it would be fairly straight forward. Especially if you have the complete replacement motor. I'm not sure how many of the engine parts are interchangeable. The exhaust may be a little different, but again I'm not sure. You could try cross referencing the parts and see if they match or not.

The other issue could be the motor mounts. I know the AQ125 is simply hung from the transom, But I haven't worked on a 131 before.

Let us know what you do and how it goes.:)

Re: motor swap question

Thank you for your reply, I will report back with progress and any issues I run into. I'm pulling the AQ125 this morning and hopefully installing the 131 this afternoon; but as everyone knows " the best laid plans" etc.

The AQ131 is complete save for an oil pressure sending unit switch. As for mounts, I suppose I can fabricate something up when I get to that point.

Thanks again.

Re: motor swap question

I looked at a parts breakdown and it appears the 131 has front mounts. Are they still bolted to the motor you have?

Don't be in too much of a rush. If you need to add the front mounts to your hull, You don't want to do it with the engine in the way. You could lower the engine into the boat and figure out where the mounts need to be, pull the engine back out and epoxy/glass in a couple mounts without too much trouble.

Again let us know how it goes. Post some pics of the project if you can.:)
