Hi I am new to this forum business so bare with me. I am currently running a 77' 115 evinrude, I have a 96' 115 faststrike on the way. Will my old controls and harness work? If it won't just hook up does omc make adapters for this sort of thing? Please Help!! Thanks

Welcome to iboats.

I believe the wiring connectors changed in 1995. But there are adapters. I'm not sure the alarm in your box would be compatable, and you might or might not have a trim button.

The harness changed in 1996. If this is the motor you bought on Ebay you may want to verify that it is a 1996. IE -- does it have the large red cannon plug for a harness connector or not?

Re: Motor swap

I think if you pull the cover off your 77'Rude,you'll find it has a large black main plug connector. This will not be adaptable.

If by chance it is a large red connector, there were adapters available.Maybe you can still buy them.

Either way,I would want a newer control doing the shifting,as opposed to an older, worn one.Newer engines shift a whole lot more positively, with very little throw.Your 1977 control has a lot of throw, even before it got 27 years old.

A new control will run you $200 plus, and you need a wire harness between it and the motor. Also get two new control cables.

Think about it this way.If you had a 1977 car with original tires, and bought a 1996 car, which tires would you want and trust on the 1996 ?

DHP
