Hi Guys, new to forum so if this is the wrong place sorry, I have a 6hp fisherman that is really messing with me, we took it out three times the first time ran pretty good, the second time it ran fine for a while then it started acting like it wanted to die and lost power. changed plugs clean carb and got fresh fuel. tested it at home and it seemed to run fine. went out again and it ran great for about 15min. then same thing lost power and started missing and acting like it would die limped in at a real slow speed. third time it did same thing from get go. it seems to start up fine, good power in Idle, reverse has good power as well, but when put in forward no power it acts up. so i am not a great mechanic need some advice on what it is. though about changing points. not sure if thats the prob. unsure how to get to them does that take a gear puller to get the flywheel off?
thanks for help. jefe:confused:

no u dont need a gear puller for the fly but i dont think thats the problem cus if it starts up and runs in idle and revers fine then you know you have spark n gas what u might have is some sort of electrical short with the shift sensor,
does it die as soon as you put it in gear or is it when you try to give it gas?
try giving it gas slowly if not wile in newtral take hood off and give it a few reves get it nice n hot then try to shift n go

You dont say what year or model number.

if old enough to be points ignition then well worth checking them and inspecting the coils.

But first check the sparks with a spark tester. If good perhaps not a lot of point in pulling the flywheel.

Compression test too maybe.

I'd put money on the carb still not being clean. All jets and passages blown through, soft wire through jets.

Carb adjusted according to http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352

no it doesn't die right away in fact it will run quite a distance, but with no power. heck my kid said the trolling motor runs almost as fast....it shifts fine from neutral to Reverse and Forward. and in idle and reverse sounds fantastic. but when put in forward no power bogs down and barely moves the boat.??? why would it run so good in reverse and at idle???? confusing. jefe

sorry its a 69 Evenrude, fisherman. yeah it sat for a couple of years, could it be as easy as getting the carb redone? weird it runs great in idle and reverse.
thanks for your help. Jefe

I'd have thought you would need a harmonic balancer puller for that flywheel. That's what the three threaded holes in it are for.

There is no logic in why it will run in reverse but not forward.

Neutral is different because there's no load and not really pulling fuel through the carb main jets.

Could be something mechanically wrong in the gear case maybe but no idea what!

Shift sensor?? What shift sensor?

Check fuel flow and fuel pump.

If its a dirty carb playing the choke may help it to keep going.

If it's a fuel flow or pump problem pumping the bulb will keep it going.

Re: Motor troubles need help

well we pulled the fuel filter off and checked diaphragm, and filter screen it was good. then we check compression 90 on top and 95 on the bottom. were good there. so then because I thought i should check the points, we tried a trick the neighbor new to get off the flywheel without a gear puller, and it work slick we looked at the points a little burned. I heard some old guy tell me once that you can clean them up and they will work. since its Sunday i took some fine grit and cleaned them up. we put it together and started it up. wouldn't you know it, she ran like a top. took it to the lake for a test and she ran for about 30 min without a hitch. we brought it home. and now after all that work I made a deal with the neighbor for his 25 hp mariner, and traded my 6 hp Evenrude in the deal electric start and more HP...we are fishing now. thanks for all you help guys, I should have checked the points earlier. jefe:):cool:
