Re: motor underwater

Hello ja<br /> The book recomends disassembly and cleaning. I'm going to agree. I have a 10hp evin that I sank last year in salt water. It had been under about 15 min. I bailed out the boat, got as much water out of the carb as I could, drained the fuel filter, removed the spark plugs, drained the cylenders. I then turned the motor over several times to blow the water out. I put everything back together. I then tipped the fuel tank so the feed pipe was on the high side. This allowed me to pump enough water out of the tank, with the primer bulb, that I could get clean fuel. I then started the motor and ran a half hour back to the take out. I did not take the powerhead apart. I did how ever wash and oil the external works (ignit, etc). This motor still runs perfect and I still use it on a regular basis. I have worked on quite a few sinkers. What ever you decide to do, do it right away, a couple of hours dry could be too long. If it take that long to get it in to the shop, Keep it sub merged unitl you get there. Unless it was running when it went under there probably won't be any real damage. Leave it and do nothing for a day or two and you'll have a pile of scrap.

Re: motor underwater

don't be to afraid of motors that were under water, just try to get running as soon as possible when they come out. pull the plugs out and squirt oil in the cyl's, then keep them out and turn engine over while squirting oil in carbs. start with fresh gas next and you should be ok. we had one come to our marina that was under water for two weeks, he did not tell us this, and it sat one more week at our marina. that was three years ago and its still going strong
