Motor will not stop

Please help...I have a 1972 Merc 500 that continues to run when I turn the starter switch to OFF.... it was working perfectly one min but now will not turn off ..I have to choke the engine to kill it...all other functions of the switch work..start... the choke on top of the control box...etc any suggestions would be appreciated

The motor is stopped by grounding out the magneto spark source. There should be two (likely black) wires connected to the switch which should kill the engine when they are electrically connected. If the engine does stop..then it is your switch, if not then that wire has broken somewhere and is not continuous between the switch and the motor.
