My '72 9.5 Evinrude shifts fine into neutral and forward, but it won't shift into reverse. The lever will go up into reverse, but it just won't catch. What is the problem? Thanks

Brent

Re: motor won't go into reverse

Hello Brent,
Check the shift rod coupler,it's behind a little cover on the starboard side of the lower unit leg. The cover is held in place by two screws. The lower and upper shift rods must extend all the way into the coupler. If that's not the problem, then I think that you have problems in the lower unit.
Good luck

Thanks...I will check that tomorrow. I hope it is something simple like that, since it is very important to be able to use reverse!

Brent

Re: motor won't go into reverse

I don't know for sure but isn't that motor an electric shift. I thought that all 72 and before were. If that is the case then you have an electrical problem or the selinoid in the lower unit is not working properly.

Do you need a factory service manual for that motor. I think I have an original service manual for a 1970 9.5HP that would be close. Would need to check the model numbers. This is a factory service manual, not an aftermarket.

If you are interested e-mail me at arlan@pldi.net

$13.20 delivered to you in the US.

Arlan

Re: motor won't go into reverse

I have a 69 model 9.5 that was doing something similar, it was hitting reverse and clicking but not going in. I checked everything that I could and found that it was that linkage at the end of the shift lever on the top end of the motor. There is an adjustment bolt there. I adjusted the little bolt and it shifts just fine now. I dont know if pre-70's motors are electric shift, but I know that my 69 is not.

NathanY,
your problem sounds almost exactly like mine. The funny thing about mine is that when I tilt the motor up to the highest tilt setting(all the way up), it will easily click into reverse when the motor is tilted to one side. When I put the motor back down, it goes back to what it always does, and won't engage reverse. Strange

Brent

Re: motor won't go into reverse

HI, again, Is it possible you have a broken motor mount that is allowing the motor to change it's position the way it sits when it is tilted down compared to when it is tilted up, that could throw the linkage out just enough to lose shifting.

Re: motor won't go into reverse

Is a motor mount expensive and/or hard to replace? Thanks

Brent
