motor wont run fast

havin trouble wit my chrylser outboard motor...when i tuk it out last week...when we crank it up to go to our spot it ran perfect bout 30 mph but then when we left the spot to go to another it wouldnt go faster then 10 mph...so i got kinda scared and slowly drove it back to the dock....can anyone give me a suggestion on wat happen......

Welcome to iboats.


It could be a lot of things, some cheap to fix, some not so much.


Cheapest: loose wire connection in the ignition wiring. $0

Next cheapest: Bad fuel pump diaphram leaking fuel directly into the crankcase, flooding out a cylinder of two. $15

One of the carbs is plugged up with dirt. $40

Blown head gasket causing loss of compression. $50

Bad coil, stator, or trigger. $100-$500.


Melted piston or broken rings. $350-$999.


Start with the basics, check for spark on all plugs, then compression test each cylinder.

If you have spark and compression, its most likely a fuel (carb) issue.
