I've got a 1987 2 stroke Yamaha pro50 electric start only it wont start when its cold outside unless i spray a little starter fluid in the air box then is busts off and runs great. then we will get to the duck hole hunt for 4-5 hours and its the same thing all over again. it started fine for me in the fall 60-70 degrees but now that its high 30's - mid 40's its giving me a fit.

what can i do because i know starter fluid is not good for a 2 stroke

I've changed the plugs already

have you checked to see if the choke is closing the plates completely when you hit the switch?

yes I've pulled the box and checked it everything seem to work as it should. the only thing that ive noticed lately thats different with the motor is that if its sitting at ideal there is lot of fuel gas mix in the water

Have you checked fuel pump?

Either fuel pump is leaking or someting is not letting motor burn all of the fuel in each cylinder( flooding or loosing spark)

If there is a leak in diaphragm it will get sucked into crankcase through pulse port that operates the pump

Start with a compression then a spark test. Post the results.
Pull choke or electric?
Clean the carbs,rebuild fuel pump.
While carbs are off, check the reeds for damage??

I going with a tired engine with marginal compression. If the engine runs fine when it finally starts, then the carbs are fine along with the ignition system. Cranking speed when cold could be an issue

the heads where redone at the beginning of last summer along with new reeds. i talked to a mechanic yesterday and he thinks it might be my gas oil mix. the oil that i buy is in the new style bottle with the straw like thing on the side to squeeze the bottom to fill the top chamber, but the only problem is the top chamber doesn't have a line to tell you the exact amount

Sounds like you are not using a good marine grade 2 stroke oil and are not measuring it to get the proper ratio

Yes, it sounds like it's running a little rich. Has it been smoking (white smoke) as well? Try leaning out the carb once you get it going.

The reason I asked about the smoking was because with 2 strokes if they are running too rich they tend to smoke. This could be the source of your problem. It would b like leaving the choke on all the time.

Head redone and reeds replaced? What problems was it having that warranted that? The oil mixture isn't going to stop it from starting. I still haven't heard a compression reading yet.
