I just got a 1971 Johnson 9.5 and need some help with the tilt. In the down position, I could not figure out how to release it to tilt the motor up. I manually pivoted the locking lever and eventually figured out that a cable connects the locking lever to the shift lever. Shifting to reverse allows the motor to be tilted. In neutral, sometimes I cannot tilt the motor up and sometimes, the locking lever doesn't quite catch, so with a little effort, I can get it to tilt up. I have a service manual for this motor but it doesn't get into this detail. I don't have an operators manual. Can anyone explain how this is supposed to work and and adjustments I may be able to make?
