I have a celebrity 20 foot open bowrider with a 5.0 LX motor. Some times when I try to start it, I turn the key and all the gauges come on but when you turn it far enough to start the engine nothing happens sometime. If you keep bumping the key several times it kicks in and will start. This problem happens time to time. Sometime I have no problems with it . I just don't want to get stranded in the middle of some lake.Any idea what to check. Thanks Derrick

Derrick, You would be better moving this to the I/O forum.

I have had your problem, but have never completely solved it. I think it is a grounding of the slave solenoid issue, or a atarter solenoid problem. I put a new ground wire on the slave solenoid and it helped a bit.

On that motor, the starter solenoid pulls a piston into the solenoid, which pushes the starter drive gear into the flywheel ring gear. When the piston reaches the base of the solenoid, the electrical connection is made to turn the starter motor. I think the piston gets stuck in the cylinder, however, I never could prove it. The next time your starter breaks, buy a new one, versus a rebuilt one. It may work better.

Ayuh,.........

Just removing, Cleaning,+ reinstalling All of the Battery Wires will Usually clear up issues like this,......

You have to do Both ends of the wires,.....

And,..... Any Ground Wires or Straps you can find should be Cleaned,+ reinstalled.......

Re: Motor won't turn over sometimes

I had trouble with mine and took the selenoid apart just to see how it worked although I knew I couldn't fix it. It jusst pulled a piston to the bottom with a bronze washer on it. The washer made a contact on one side of the body and connected it to a contact on the other side of the body thus completing the circuit. One contact and wahser side was coated with a green oxide and had been arcing for some time. I would start by checking continuity on the selenoid. Otherwise check nuetral switch. Checking all the battery terminals and such would also be good...........Jerry
