1997 90 Evinrude. I was idling to the trailer when it cut off. I restarted made loud noise and now wont start. Will turn over a little but most of the time its just a bump. Have I broke a rod ? Cannot turn propeller over when in gear. I really dont know? I am taking to someone local this afternoon. Just would like an opinion.

Re: Motor wont turn over

Need more information. Could be a simple as a stuck starter or something could have come loose inside the motor. You will need to look it over outside first and then you may need to pull the spark plugs out and peak inside. If something looks out of place pull the heads if not look elsewhere.

Have pulled the plugs, everything looks fine. Have only had boat for two weeks. Boat has ran perfect. I hope its as simple as the starter.

try to spin motor by hand without the plugs in it should spin fairly easy if not there might be something going on inside the motor do a compression test this will tell the condition of your cylinders. post the results there shouldn't be more than a 10% diff. between each cyl.

With the plugs out make sure the satrter is not engaged with the flywheel, if it is not try to turn the motor by hand by turning the flywheel. It should rotate without too much effort.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, sure takes the enjoyement out of boating. I would take Tashasdaddys advice too. Tough way to learn about boating. Good luck on repowering, if going used have a reputable shop or knowledgeable friend help check it out. Still no guarentee the previous owner took care of it. Good luck.
