Motor work on the 'muffs'

Ever since I bought my 94 Caravelle 5.0, it's had tons of work done while on the water muffs. When I give it some gas in neutral there is this loud rattle from the outdrive around 1500-2800, then it just sounds like a normal V8 revving. Is this harmful for some reason?

I'm new at this, so trying not to do anything that will hurt the boat.

It is probably the u joints.Trim down as far as you can and do the same rev and listen. If it were a clicking sound, that would be the drive unit.If you can hear it inside the boat it is the exhaust shudders.None of these are unusual. CC

Even in neutral? It sounds like...*ahem*...

mmmmmmmAAAAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrmmmmmm, as you progress through the rpm range. Pretty darn loud. It doesn't do this when in the water, best I can tell.

That sounds like the u joint. If trimming all the way down, the sound should go away. CC

Nah, the trim is all the way down. I don't have it in any gear, just neutral.
