Can someone tell me the year of the motor:
Mercury 35HP Ser# 6579602

Also.....
I am new to outboards. How does the top cover come off? I popped the plastic piece that houses a pull start rope, but I still can't see how to get the cover off. I see ther is a lever inside that cover area, but I can't pull it because their is a coupling that holds the tin piece that wraps around the engine (the piece that actually says Mercury). I can't see how that piece comes off.

Thanks

1984.

Remove the 'tin wrap' from the engine by releasing the clip on the front that pulls it tight. Then you'll be able to pull the lever that locks the top cover down.

Chris..........

Re: Motor Year

How can you tell the year from the serial number?

Also, how do you remove the clip. It is a hinged hook, very tight.

I have a secret book of numbers :D

Correct. The hook is hinged. If it's really tight (and that means the previous idiot did it up too tight!) put a screwdriver under the free end and give it a bit of help. When you get it off, you'll notice that it's on a threaded rod, unscrew it a little and check that it's not so tight anymore.

Chris.......

Lightman,

That's an old one! It pre-dates my book of numbers, so it will be around 1961-62. It's a 4 cylinder. That engine was later updated and become one of the real classics, the 4 cyl 50hp.

Chris........
