Selecting batteries for a trolling motor should not be as much of an issue as it is made out to be. People tend to think as what is the "minimum" requirement rather than "how much room do I have". Always select the largest capacity deep cycle battery you have room for and your budget allows. For most motors a group 27 (physical size) is minimum. Group 29 and 31 are also available. When comparing batteries in the same group size, pay attention to the RESERVE CAPACITY: xxx minutes @ xx amps. The minutes number means how long the battery can deliver xx amps without falling out of that spec. The xx amps numbers will typically be 23 or 25 amps. If the battery has an AHr (amp/hour) rating -- the higher that number is the longer that battery will operate the motor.
