Motorguide Circuit Breaker

I have an older Motorguide 41 lb thrust with transom mount. I have it 3 wired for 24/12 with 2 Interstate batteries. The high gear on 24v will fly. When I'm using high gear 24v the circuit breaker trips after about 3 minutes. I have it wired correctly and it's pushing a v 178 Ranger 17'.

What could be causing the circuit breaker to trip?

Re: Motorguide Circuit Breaker

What's the full load current on the motor at 24v?
What's the current rating of the breaker?

what size wire did you use. could be too small and heating up. the breaker is keeping it from burning up.

Re: Motorguide Circuit Breaker

I went to HomeDepot to match wiring gage but the wire I bought is probably not rated Marine. That is an excellent starting point.

I do not know how to test the full load current at 24v. I do have a standard volt Test Meter. It will give me dc and ac volts, continuity and not sure of the other functions.

Hate to ask but could you educate me on how to test for full current load?

Thanks,

Most multi meters will also display dc amps, you have to change the + lead to another jack marked dc amps. The limit is usually 10 amps.
The leads go in series with the load. In other words, connect batt - to the motor, batt + to the - lead of the meter and + meter lead to motor. Then run motor. If it's an analogue meter and it tries to read down, reverse the + and - leads.

Actually, the full load amps should be marked on the motor nameplate. I was meaning for you to have a look and post.

Re: Motorguide Circuit Breaker

what size break are you using? how long is the run for the wire, if motor is in bow, and battery in stern, you have to increase the size of the wire for the run.
