I've got a 1992 30lb Motorguide that stopped working recently. The fusible link is open, and the main two-pronged connector from the battery was melted. The rubber boot on the negative terminal was melted to be specific. I'm guessing internal short at the motor, but
I can't find a wiring diagram.

Do any of you know where I can find wiring diagrams on line for Motorguide?

Or do any of you have a test procedure I could follow?

Re: Motorguide Shorted

Wires generally get hot at the site of the problem. If the connector was worn and pins weren't making good contact the connector melts. If the connector contacts are too small for the current load the connector melts. If the connections at the battery(ies) are not clean and tight that creates resistance and things get hot. I doubt your motor is the problem. The best test is to cut the wires at the connector (it needs to be replaced anyway. Then connect the motor wires directly to the battery and see if the motor runs. If it does, simply repair the wiring, fix connections, replace the connector and go fishing. Turn the prop by hand to see if its binding. If it is, there may be tight bearings or fish line wound oup behind the prop. I'll bet the problem is wiring and not the motor.

Re: Motorguide Shorted

Motor tested fine.

I think because my plug was in such bad shape, I managed to rotate the plug and got the pos terminal into the ground receptacle.

I crimped on a new plug and receptacle, popped in a new fusible link and it works fine.

Thanks
