Have a MG Model 536 hand-tiller controlled. After operating a short period of time (in speed 4 and 5), the trolling motor begins to periodically kick on and off. Replaced the rotary switch thinking that would solve the problem. But ... no luck. Speeds 1 thru 3 do not appear to have this problem. Any suggestions?

Re: Motorguide speed 4 and 5 kicking on and off

The circuit breaker is cycling on and off. Speeds 4 and 5 draw the most current so you have a breaker that has cycled enough that it has de-rated itself. Every time a circuit breaker cycles (in your home or in your boat) it loses a tad bit of its current carrying capacity. It eventually reaches a point where it opens at 35 amps for example when its rating is 40A. If you don't have a breaker, then there is a breaker built into the motor and it is cycling. Wiring with wire sizes that are too small causes heat and high current flow. Bad connections causes problems as well. A motor that is beginning to seize up or has tight bearings can also draw more current. Check to make sure you don't have 20 yards of fish line wrapped up behind the prop. So start with the obvious.
