I have a Brute 750 Motorguide 24 V foot control and it died on me today at the lake. This was it's first trip out. It ran real good and then after a couple of hours it just stopped.

I have a feeling the issue is somewhere in the switches in the foot control. How do you test to verify it is a switch problem or a motor problem? There are so many wires in the foot control I'm not sure which ones to check. The Motorguide troubleshooting guide says to check the micro, on/off and bypass switches. Not sure how to do that.

I did some probing around and there is 24 volts on the back side of the intermittent switch button.

I did notice that there was a little darkening around the wiring that connect to the variable speed rotary switch.

I'm not an electrician, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Crankit

Re: Motorguide troubleshooting help

Remove the cover at the top of the motor shaft. See if you have 24V at that point. If not, the problem is in the foot control or the wiring to the head. You know you have 24V to the foot control since you said you measured it at the INT switch. If you have 24V at the head, you the problem is either in the wiring down the shaft, bad brushes in the motor, or the motor itself.

Re: Motorguide troubleshooting help

Thanks Silvertip, I removed the top cover and no voltage. However, in the process of turning the footcontrol upside down, the motor started to work. I noticed that the one of the wires coming out of the microswitch was very corroded. I took the both wires off and cleaned real good and replaced. It seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks again, Crankit

Re: Motorguide troubleshooting help

I just bought #6 stranded wire at an ACE Hardware for $.79 per foot. I bought both black and red wire. My question is how much power do you lose if you use #8 or #10 wire? I hooked up my 70# Brute 24V, charged my batteries, and took it out over the weekend. It showed a full charge, but it only lasted about one hour before it was drained.9 i WAS TROLLING AT 2.1 MPH in my 18foot Fisher. I used the same wiring hookup that my old 12V 55 # motorguide had except hooked up to 24V terminals. . I am now changing to #6 wire hoping that this was the problem. Anyone with experience? My 12 V batteries both read full charge. They are wired properly. I actually got better battery life with the 12V unit. This is bow mount with only 5 foot of wire to the batteries from the plug.
