Motorguide "what if" question

OK looking for advice/experience. I'm need to replace the lower unit on my motorguide pro 46. In looking for complete lower units I got to thinking about a 55lb lower unit.

Seeings how they're both 12V systems, could I put the 55lb lower unit on the 46lb head and shaft. I'm slightly mechanically inclined, but I'm a carpenter by trade and always like to ask more experienced people questions in these situations.

Any help or info is appreciated.

Well first things first. :welcome: aboard Eastman_phillip. Great to have you join us...

Answering your question, maybe! I say maybe if your present shaft is the same setup of the new replacement. Then they would just swap out. However, if the diameter is different then you would have to replace bearings to fit things together. If I had to say without seeing either of them, I would guess they would fit without any problems. But that is just my guess. You could even look to replace just the motor housing unit to your shaft. Just another idea.

Thanks gm. That''s the way I was thinking also. If dimensions are the same, I would think it should work. I was kinda hoping I'm not the only crazy person to think of this. $200 for a new lower unit, with more thrust, or $600+ for a whole new trolling motor.
