I bought a new 17' AW aluminum boat w/trailer. I have a 2006 Honda BF50 ordered and will be here in late June. I got a real good deal on the boat, the boat was fitted with a 50 HP Mercury on the showroom floor. Someone bought the Merc and they pulled it off the boat. The salesman told me the 50 Honda would fit since it was drilled for the bigger motor. Is he correct or am I @#%$. If the motor does'nt line up what are my options?

Well, it's going to be hard to tell until you have the new Honda on hand. The salesperson could be telling you the truth or blowing smoke up your leg.

Are you planning to do the installation yourself or are you going to have the dealer install the motor?

You might want to consider having the dealer do the installation and setup.

Pretty sure you are getting a line of you know what. Merc 50 and 60 are both the same motor besides the HP rating and would mount the same. It is possible that Honda holes will line up, but I would make it pretty clear that if they don't you are going to have a problem with that. IN fact you could probably look it up. Honda has all the manuals on line.

Tell em to put a merc back on it and sell it if you don't want to run a merc. I have to tell you that merc 50 is one hell of a 4 stroke. Smooth as butter and it has EFI where the Honda does not. Honda is a solid motor. Honda fans will say the motor is lighter and it has three carbs that deliver fuel better than the merc EFI and it is also lighter. Merc is 4 cylinders instead of 3 and it will be smoother running. I sold my boat with the merc to a guy who lost the same boat with a honda 50 in a divorce. After running the merc for 5 minutes, he said it was smoother than the Honda. Either way you go, you will be happy.

As fate has it I just purchased a smaller boat and went with an 05 Honda 25. Pretty hard to beat the Honda in that class. The yamaha is a two thumper, merc only makes a bigfoot in 25, and the Suzuki/Johnson is like 212 lbs.
