Mounting lower unit to upper unit on alpha one outdrive

Ok, I just got done installing a new water pump in my alpha one outdrive. Now, I cant seem to get the lower unit all the way in the upper unit. I did NOT know that I had to put the helm in the forward position BEFORE I dropped the lower unit. I guess what im asking for is how can I get the lower unit all the way up to the upper unit. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

put the shifter into fwd gear in the boat. rotate the propshaft ccw while turning the shift rod clockwise until you feel the prop lock. wrap a bungee cord ccw around the prop and attach it to the anti cav plate to ensure the lower doesn't jump out of fwd.
the put the lower up. You'll have to align the water pump tube and the splines, if the splines misalign just get it up and give the prop a good pull ccw and that will rotate the driveshaft.

Is the shift rod that little brass colored rod at the leading part on the outdrive?

Thanks again shipmates, I FINALLY got her up in there, boy did it take alot of shaking and pushing to get her to seat properly...

glad ya finally got it. fwiw. it's been very easy for me to put the upper and lower back together again while it's on the bench, by myslef. much, much easier. + ya can do pm while ya have the drive off... just food for thought for the next time..
