hello all. seemed to have primer bulb issues. i had it mounted vertical for awhile and this year motor seemed to be running out of fuel and when pumped bulb it seem always low in pressure.other day after getting to fishing spot and motor acting up on way out i moved primer bulb in differnt spot so it would be easier for wife to pump it while in motion.i moved it about 2 foot from motor which also was now mounted horizonal.instantly when pumping up seemed already feeling different.since feeling different on way home told wife not to mess with it and made it all way home and motor didnt act up. i already bought new primer bulb but was wondering if there is a way your suppose to mount it.i'd plan on mounting it back in compartment where it would be kinda vertical. but would mount in different spot if its suppose to be horizonal.just never remenber learning that mounting angle was an issue.if anybody knows any info please learn me something. thanks in advance

Re: mounting primer bulb

just wanted to add something. when it was mounted vertical the inlet was at bottom and outlet was mounted on top going to water separator. like i said its been mounted like this for years and no problem until now and wanted to know if theres a textbook way to mount them just to know the theory about them.

Re: mounting primer bulb

I have seen them mounted vertically but it is not required. Now to properly prime the bulb it is best that the arrow be pointed vertically, I would think that mounting it vertically would make the fuel pump work harder. The maximum fuel lift is 30". This means that from the bottom of the pickup tube, to the fuel pump cannot exceed 30" in height.

The angle of the primer bulb is not usiually of major importance, see if the fuel tank is properly vented, also see if your fuel pump check valves are sealing properly. I have also seen fuel vapor in the lines keeping liquid fuel from reaching the fuel pump. I bet one or more of these could possibly be your gremlin.

Re: mounting primer bulb

The bulb is there to fill the VST tank, once its full you dont even need a bulb as long as mechanical fuel pump is operating correctly and mounting postion does not matter. Is your fuel line the grey Merc line? Does it have the red lettering? If so ditch it!!!

Re: mounting primer bulb

Check the installation of the water separator. Mine specified that the primer bulb be b/t the separator and the engine. Not sure if having yours b/t the tank and separator would contribute to the problem.
