Can I mount my starting battery on an angle?

I want to put the battery in the splashwell, which is an angle, roughly a 30-40 degree I would say. I will have it in a battery box.

Any issues I should be aware of? I dont see any water splashing over the back (who does?) it has never happened in 3 years so I will take my chances with that.

-John

You'll probably expose the uphill corners of the plates to air, sulfating them. Leaking acid is also a strong possibility. Can you construct a platform to allow level installation? Otherwise look into a gel battery.

Agreed, your plates need to be emmersed in water....30 to 40 degree angle will expose some plates and will shorten the life of a conventional lead-acid battery. Occasional tipping doesn't hurt them, but they need to be "usually" level. On the flip side, gel or dry cell batteries can be installed upside-down if you like.

Darn it, guess I will need to think of another location for it.

If you have enough height the idea Willy had about building a bracket would be the best. A simple metal or wood wedge large enough to mount the battery case on would work fine.

If money isn't an issue, an agm battery should be able to
handle that angle with out a problem.

Jim

Just make yourself an angle bracket. Attach it to your boat and the battery to it where it can sit flat. It must sit flat.

Mark

Yep. be safe build a bracket, leaking battery acid isn't a pretty thing, and will turn just about anything into junk
