i have a 9.5 in an aluminum 12 foot vhull the cavatation plate is alittle low and i am having trouble getting on plane.can i move the engine up about an inch and place a peice of solid rubber between the bottom of the engine mount and top of the transom?this will almost put my cavitaion plate at the same hight as the bottom of the boat.the engine clamps are still under the aluminum L bracket that runs along the top of the transom.will this put unwanted stress on the transom.the max engine this boat will take is a 15 hp. i am running a 9.5

wayne34609 - Moving the motor may not do much and your problem may be elsewhere. I hqave a 13' alumnium open boat (v forward rounding out to the stern). I have a 1975 9.9 long shaft on it so my cavitation plate sits 5" below the bottom. It gets up on plane with the wife & I (200#) + 6 gal of fuel and a cooler.

I don't see any problem with this. The cavitation plate should be at or near the bottom of the boat, maybe just slightly above it. Try it and see what happens. If this dosn't help, you may want to take a look at your prop. It may be pitched wrong for your boat. It should let your motor operate in the upper 1/4 of the full throttle RPM range specified by the manufacturer.

Two comments on your posts....

(1) I have a 44 year old riveted aluminum runabout that doesn't leak a drop. And, it's always been powered by a 35 or 40 hp engine.

(2) 20 mph sounds very fast for a 9.5 engine. Check that speedometer against a GPS.
