I posted this in the johnson motor side, but i will post this over here, as well,
i am redecking an older riviera cruiser pontoon and need to move both the throttle controls, and the steering, that said i dont want a big hole in the new deck of my pontoon, so what is the correct way to reroute those cables?
i assume i need to unhook both cables so i can drill a small hole (diameter of the existing cables) the reroute, also i want to move the throttle box to the rights side railing anyone else done this? any ideas on how to make the bracket so i dont have to drill holes in the railing?
thanks for any ideas?

sorry the motor is an older 75 horse stinger, and the throttle box is a power shift 2,
Is stainless steel hardware a must or will galvanzied hardware work just as good, for the deck and sides? the old hardware is just regular hardware.
I am also planing on getting a new steering colum and seats anything to look out for? or stay away from?

Re: moving controls on pontoon

1 more thing to ask, i need about 6 inches of various alum. welded on the pontoon hand rails, and 1 weld is cracking between the toons and the supports to the deck, that is letting water (small amounts) in to the pontoon.
what should i expect to pay for this welding to get done? What is really too expensive i relieze are matters, so i am in central ky, outside of e-town(30 miles south)
thanks again?

Re: moving controls on pontoon

Generally everything goes through one big hole, all the wires and control cables then they branch off under the boat, they have to go through the floor unless you want them laying on top of the deck and one big hole is better than a couple small ones.

I assume you are moving the console to the other side of the boat, as long as your cables reach that isn't a problem but I don't see how you will get around going through the deck.

Get an inner tube and screw it around the hole then cut a hole in it to run the cables through then when you are sure you have everything run caulk the hole and the cables, that will keep water out.

You will also have to pull all the wires so make sure you mark them with a masking tape flag with exactly what they are and where they go before you pull them off.

A single hole close to the top of the tube isn't a big deal.

As far as mounting the controls on the rail, can't you just use what is there now and reverse it?

Stainless is obviouly better as galvanized will "run" eventually leaving a mark on the rail and you definately do not want to use regular steel bolts since they will rust so between the 2 I would go with galvanized.

The welding, you will have to actually find a welder and as a price, it varied greatly but I would suspect @ $100 to do it right.

Oddly enough I am the weld repair guy at Bennington so to fix the bracket you can't just weld it because it will still leak, you will just seal the leak under the weld.

You will have to have the guy drill a small line of holes along the bracket just above the weld, burn those up then seal the tube then weld the bracket to the tube again, I have done that a bunch of times and it is the only way to be sure you get it sealed.

Make sure he pulls the plug on the section he is working on so air doesn't build up inside the tube, it makes it impossible to weld since air is leaking out the hole.

Hope that helps

Re: moving controls on pontoon

thank you for your reponse, the throttle control needs moved as it is bolted to the left side of the existing steering colum. which is right in the middle of the pontoon, (takes up a lot of room for nothing)now we are right hnded and want it on the right side of our seat, and the steering colum to the right side of the pontoon, (confused yet  i am)
now my steering has a large gear box that is directly behind the steering wheel, the hole to bring that back up through the new deck would need to be a 1 ft by 1ft square, and that just seems to be to large to me,(it seems like it would look better if i drilled only a 2 inch hole and unhooked the cables and brought them through that ) should i use those stainless deck plates everywhere i have a hole? and it would need caulking as well wouldnt it?

1 foot X 1 foot???????... Nahhhh. I've never seen a hole more than 4 inches circular.
And yes it needs to be sealed but not with caulking. Normally you use foam.

Good luck

I've just read you post more closely. You don't bring the whole gearbox through the hole!!!!. Only the cables!!!!!
