Quick one and something I haven’t seen info on before;
Is the RPM indicated by the smartcraft considered pin point accurate ? Presumably it is ? How is that info gathered by the ecu or ecm ?

Only as good as the sensor which is used to record it.
The RPM is 100% accurate so far as the motor is concerned, and should be accurate. The RPM tells the ECM when to turn on/off injectors and for how long, along with the other sensors which tells when to fire plugs and so on

Was thinking as much AD. Thanks for this. Amazing the variation between the anolouge tacho and the smart craft. Especially at the high end of the range.

analog gauges are simply a voltage gauge. all signals are converted to volts, which moves the air core motor which sweeps a dial.
