Glad you understand. Where do you want to go from here?
If you like the boat, and the boat is in good shape, there are options.

boats in real good shape. i have got est. on mercruiser change outs from 5000.00 and up. not gonna do that right now so im going to start out changing out the starter first since it is the toughest to get to. i will have to cut a hole in the deck to get access. i will need help on the ignition system though and i will contact the forum when im ready to do that. thanks again.

Take the engine out of the boat. Get if fixed properly, then put it back in.
It's very easy to run an engine while it's sitting on the floor.

Ayuh,.... You don't need a Whole new motor, you just gotta dress yers as a Mercruiser...

Like Don says, it's easier on the ground than in the boat...

'n a starter, carb, alternator, 'n ignition ain't nowhere near 5 Grand...

i hear ya bond-o. i just rebuilt the carb, a rochester 2 barrel. installed tonite. i unhooked the throttle cable and had my son turn the key while i worked the carb. their was a spark comming from neg. terminal of coil to lead wire on ign. coil. would not start. i had a new coil on hand and installed it and it fired right up. i have to do some idle adjustments but it worked. first carb job. going to dania marine flea market and see if i can pick up marine parts to change out this weekend. first carb rebuilt and it worked! well alright!!!

Ayuh,.... That spark leak says there's too much resistance, Downstream from the coil....

Bad wires,...
Bad distributor cap,...
Bad spark plugs,....
